TAMPA BAY LINE FLYERS

W.W.II Quadrathon Rules

Semi Scale / Stunt / Rat /Proto Speed

OBJECTIVE:   To provide event rules for W.W. II Semi-Scale model airplanes to compete both exclusively and collectively for their appearance and performance in Stunt, Rat Racing and Proto Speed.

OVERALL RULES:

General:  All aircraft (including spares) are initially evaluated by the Semi-Scale Event Director for basic semi-scale event qualification before flying or appearance judging begins.  Qualifying models are the only models permitted to fly in the contest.  The intent for basic qualification is that the models meet all Semi-Scale criteria outlined herein and are designed/built to fly all-events.  Models that suggest they were built to specialize in only one event will be disqualified, although they need only fly in one lap of one event to validate their Semi-Scale Points.   The Contest and Flight Event Directors will enforce an eight-minute time limit for Stunt and Slow Rat Events and seven minutes for Proto Speed, unless changed before each event's flying begins. Models are expected to be realistic in appearance and in outline configuration.

Planes:  Qualifying planes are any single engine aircraft that saw combat in the Second World War (see Master List).  They must also be Profile fuselages (maximum of 1” wide – except a front end reinforcement pod is OK), with 36"- 48" wingspan. Two main-gear wheels are required.  The Contest or Event Director may determine a damaged airplane no longer worthy of safe flight and permit at his discretion an originally "qualified spare" to be flown as a replacement, but not during a pit stop.

Engine:  Fox .35 or .29 Stunt only; without special head, backplate, liner, re-design etc.  Improved part fitting, extra head shims, replacement needle valve and fuel shutoffs are OK.  Pressure or quick-fill tanks are not allowed.  Props, plugs and gas tanks may be changed as desired for each flight event; however, the prop used for appearance judging must also be flown in one event.

Lines:  60' (+/- 6") , airplane centerline to handle, with multiple strand at least .015 diameter required.

Points:  Each contestant receives one point for each contestant he beats in each of the four events and total for overall score. Ties are broken by the Semi-Scale position.   A contestant is considered automatically beaten in any event in which he elects not to fly.  Places are determined for each event in rank order as the basis for placement and overall scoring.  Equal scoring weight is given to each of the four events.

EVENT RULES:

Semi-Scale

All contestants judge all qualified planes, except spares and their own, in rank order determined by standoff (10') appearance and the total score from the contestants.  All removable appearance items, such as props, ordinance, etc. must be flown in at least one performance event to validate the Semi-Scale rank order.  A three point rank order penalty is otherwise incurred.

Stunt

The  Old Time Stunt   (AMA 1951 - 1952) flight pattern will be used for the Stunt event. Scoring will be as per the PAMPA Old Time Stunt scoring sheet without a K Factor. See reverse for maneuver diagrams.

 Slow Rat

Laps:  100 laps required, 2 planes in circle per heat. Max Pit Crew: 2. Pit Stops: Cold Start with 2 pit stops + 1 lap minimum.

Points: Flight time to complete, or laps completed within  8 minutes.

Proto Speed

Laps:  Timing shall begin immediately upon release of the aircraft for take-off with the subsequent 14 laps timed in seconds.

Spot Landing:  Pilots will attempt to land their planes as close as possible to a target landing spot painted on the runway following engine shutdown. Whipping the plane is permitted by the pilot for landing.

Scoring: The final score equals the 14 lap flight time in seconds plus one second for every foot of distance between the  target and the plane’s stopping point, up to 50 ft. maximum penalty.  The point of measurement is from the plane’s propellor to the target. The object is to obtain the lowest combined score (in seconds) of 14 lap flight time and the lowest possible plane’s stopping distance from the target.
